Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People argue and argue, debating on and on.

Yogis and meditators, people in holy robes and people full of learning, roam and roam, wandering all over the earth.

Endless searching and arguing can still leave the heart restless.
The deeper layer

Arguing and wandering can go on and on, round and round the whole earth.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Karat karat charach charach charcharee: talking and talking, debating and debating. Jog Dhi-aan bhaykh gi-aan: yoga, meditation, holy robes, book learning. Firat firat Dharat Dharat: roaming and roaming over the earth. The doubled words sound like footsteps going round in a circle. The picture is of a restless search, and it honors every honest path.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever looked everywhere for something that was closer than you thought?
