By His Training, I find strength with each and every breath; now that I am trained and tamed, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

By Guru's Grace, egotism is extinguished, and then, through the Guru's Teachings, I merge in the Naam. ||6||

In plain words

Under the One's guidance, I find strength with each and every breath. Now calm and steady, I remember the Naam.

By the Guru's grace, ego goes out like a candle flame, and then, through the Guru's teaching, I merge into the Naam.

Each breath can bring fresh strength and a quieter, clearer self.
The deeper layer

Breath by breath, the Guru's kindness gives new strength and helps the ego let go.

Saasan saas saas bal paa-ee hai: with each and every breath, I find strength. Think of how a few slow breaths can calm you before a big test.

Gur parsaadee ha-umai boojhai: by the Guru's grace, ha-umai, ego, the feeling of being a separate self, is seen for what it is and fades. Understanding does the work: the separate self is seen clearly and quietly lets go, like a clenched fist slowly opening. Then the mind melts into the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

How does slowing down and breathing help settle a busy mind?
