This Chance Is Precious

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਅਨ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
satgur daataa jee-a jee-an ko bhaagheen nahee bhaavaigo.
The True Guru is the Giver of the life of the soul, but the unfortunate ones do not love Him.
ਫਿਰਿ ਏਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪਰਤਾਪੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
fir ayh vaylaa haath na aavai partaapai pachhutaavaigo. ||7||
This opportunity shall not come into their hands again; in the end, they will suffer in torment and regret. ||7||

In plain words

The True Guru is the Giver of life to every soul, yet the unlucky ones do not love the Guru.

This chance will not come into their hands again, and in the end they will suffer and be sorry.

This moment is precious — reach for what matters before it slips by.
The deeper layer

This life is a precious chance to love the One, so reach for it now.

Satgur daataa jee-a jee-an ko: the True Guru gives life to the soul. Bhaagheen means one without good fortune. Here it means someone who has not yet turned toward the gift. It is not a curse.

Fir ayh vaylaa haath na aavai: this moment will not come into your hands again. The old line warns of pain and regret later. It works as a nudge to live this chance fully now. Think of a friend's birthday party. If you skip it, you cannot go back to that day. The gift is here now.

A Question to Sit With

What is one good thing you could do now instead of putting it off?
