Iron is transformed into gold by touching the philosopher's stone; it takes on its qualities. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, take shelter with the True Guru, and remember the One.

Iron turns into gold when it touches the philosopher's stone. It takes on the stone's own goodness.

Nearness to what is golden can change even iron into gold.
The deeper layer

Stay close to the True Guru, and you are changed, the way iron turns into gold.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Saran: shelter. Lohaa hiran: iron becomes gold. Paaras: the philosopher's stone, a stone in old stories that turned any iron it touched into gold. Gun paaras ko: the stone's own qualities pass into the iron.

A Question to Sit With
