Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O mind, even while you sleep, remember the One. Sink into the One easily and naturally, in deep stillness (sahaj — the natural ease of a calm heart).
Nanak says: my mind is full of a glad longing for the One, Har, Har. When the Guru is pleased, O mother, the Guru brings me to the One.
The Naam can sink so deep that you remember the One even while you sleep.
Think of a song you have heard so many times that you hum it without trying. You wake up and it is already playing in your head. The verse asks for that: suti-aa har parabh chayt man, "O mind, even asleep, remember the One." The Naam has grown so deep it runs on its own.
Then it says sahj samaadh. Samaadh means being fully absorbed, like being lost in a good book. Sahj means natural and easy. So this is being wrapped up in the One without any strain.
The last line has the word chaa-o. It means a glad kind of longing, like waiting for a friend you know is coming. That glad ache is the exact feeling of this raag, Kaanraa. And the Guru's kindness brings the meeting.
What thought is so much a part of you that it is there even as you fall asleep?
