Deep in the mind lives the sickness of ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self). Those who follow only their own minds, and those who have turned unkind, wander lost in doubt.
Nanak says: this sickness is healed by meeting the True Guru, the holy friend.
Ego is an illness, and meeting the Guru is how it heals.
The verse says ha-umai rog, "the disease of ego." Ha-umai is the feeling that I am cut off and separate, and that everything is about me. The verse does not call this a crime. It calls it a sickness. You do not punish someone for having a cold. You help them get better.
The verse says people lost in this are confused by doubt. A manmukh is someone who follows only their own wants. The durjanaa are those who have turned unkind. Both are pictured here as people caught in the confusion this ache causes.
Then comes the cure: mil satgur saaDhoo sajnaa, "meeting the True Guru, the Holy Friend." Like a good doctor who is also a friend, the Guru helps the ache ease.
What helps an uneasy, tangled feeling inside you start to heal?
