Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the Giver of all, O One; every living being is Yours.

Everyone worships You, and You give to them, Beloved.

The generous Giver reaches out a hand, and rain pours down on the world.

Grain springs up in the fields; remember the Name of the One with love.

Nanak says: I ask the One for one gift — the Name to lean on.

Grace falls like rain — and love holds the Name like the earth holds seed.
The deeper layer

The One gives to everyone, like rain falling on the whole world.

Daataa means Giver. Hath kadhi-aa: the Giver reaches out a hand. Meehu vuthaa: the rain pours down. Ann jammi-aa khaytee: grain springs up in the fields. Think of a dry summer field after the first rain, turning green almost overnight.

Har naam aDhaaray: the Name as support, like the post that holds up a house.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life grows quietly, like seeds after rain, when it is cared for?
