Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I went searching and searching for my friend — and my friend is right here with me.

Nanak says: the Unseen One cannot be seen by looking, but the one who turns toward the Guru is shown.

The One you are searching for has been beside you the whole time.
The deeper layer

The Friend you search for is already with you.

Ha-o dhoondhaydee sajnaa: I go searching for my friend. Sajan maidai naal: my friend is right here with me. It is like searching the whole house for your glasses while they sit on your nose. Alakh means the One who cannot be seen by looking. Gurmukh dayh dikhaal: the one who turns toward the Guru is shown. These are some of the tenderest lines of the whole Vaar.

A Question to Sit With

When have you looked all over for something that was right next to you?
