Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Every light is Your light, Life of the world. You color each and every heart with love.
Everyone remembers You, my Beloved. You are the True One, true through and through, the First of all, clean of every stain.
There is one Giver, and the whole world stands at the door with open hands. Everyone asks the One for gifts.
You are the servant, and You are the Master of all. Through the Guru's teaching, we grow good and fine.
Let everyone say it aloud: Rikheekes, the Master of our senses! Through the One, every good fruit comes.
There is one Giver, and all of us are the ones asking. That is nothing to be ashamed of.
Picture a big family kitchen at dinnertime. One person is serving, and everyone holds out a plate. No one feels small for holding out a plate. That is just how dinner works. The whole world is like that: ik daataa sabh jagat bhikhaaree-aa, "one Giver, and the whole world asking." And the Giver is always already serving.
The verse also says the One lives ghat ghat, "in each and every heart," coloring each one with love. Then comes a surprise: sayvak thaakur sabh toohai, "You are the servant, and You are the Master." The One is on both sides, the one who serves and the one who is served.
So asking is the honest way to stand before grace. We hold out our hands, and the gift is already on its way.
What does it feel like to receive something you did not have to earn?
