Verse 2 of 3

In The Sangat, No More Fear

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਸੰਗ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਨੋ ॥੧॥
saaDhsang jap nisang jamkaal tis na khaavno. ||1||
Whoever chants and meditates in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, shall undoubtedly escape being consumed by the Messenger of Death. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever chants and meditates on the One in the Sangat will, without any doubt, never be swallowed by death.

In the Sangat, even the biggest fears loosen their grip.
The deeper layer

Remember the One in the Sangat with your whole heart, and death loses its power over you.

SaaDhsang is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Jap means to remember the One. Nisang means without doubt, without holding back. Put together: remember the One, in the Sangat, with your whole heart.

Then comes jamkaal tis na khaavno. Jamkaal is the messenger of death in the old pictures. The verse says he cannot swallow such a person. In plain words, the fear of death loses its grip. The person keeps their freedom, and the terror goes.

Think of walking home in the dark. Alone, every shadow looks scary. With good friends beside you, you laugh and keep walking. Courage grows in the Sangat.

A Question to Sit With

What fear feels smaller when you are not facing it alone?
