Verse 3 of 3

The One Who Formed You Still Holds You

ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਧਾਰਿਓ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਰ ॥
garabh kunt meh jineh Dhaari-o nahee bikhai ban meh hor.
The One who placed you in the womb of your mother's belly - no one else shall save you in the wilderness of corruption.
ਹਰਿ ਸਕਤ ਸਰਨ ਸਮਰਥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਨ ਨਹੀ ਨਿਹੋਰ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੦॥
har sakat saran samrath naanak aan nahee nihor. ||2||2||10||
The power of the Lord's Sanctuary is all-powerful; Nanak does not rely on any other. ||2||2||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The same One who gently shaped you and kept you safe before you were even born — that One is watching over you still.

When the path gets tangled and confusing, no one else can steady you the way that One can.

Resting in Your shelter, I feel truly safe. I do not need to lean on anything else — You are enough.

The One who cared for you before you were born is caring for you still.
The deeper layer

Garabh kunt meh jineh dhaari-o — the One who held and formed you in the womb before birth. Here the womb image is tender, not fearful: the same care that shaped you continues now. The literal's wilderness of corruption is softened to a tangled, confusing path, keeping the teaching that only the One truly steadies us. Saran samrath, aan nahee nihor — the One's shelter is enough, with no need to rely on anything else. Guru Arjan signs the shabad.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone taken care of you before you were even old enough to remember it?
