Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
With my whole heart I call out: please meet me, my Beloved. This is the song underneath all my other songs.
You fill everything — the One who shaped all that is. And the way to You is walked best alongside people who love You.
In their company I begin to see You everywhere, in every single heart.
Whoever comes to You for shelter finds a deep, complete peace; not one bit of their loving effort is ever missed or wasted.
Singing Your praises, an easy calm fills me and love overflows — and I ask only to stay here, in Your care, You who are perfect and complete.
This is a love song calling out to the One: please meet me.
A Chhant is a longer, flowing song of love. Its rahaa-o, the "pause" line and center of the song, is mil mayray pareetam pi-aari-aa: meet me, my dear Beloved. Here it sits together with the first verse, so the two belong together.
The One fills everything. The One is bidhaataa, the Maker who shapes what happens in our lives. The way to the One is learned santan sang, in the company of people who love the One. There we start to see the One in every heart. Whoever comes for shelter finds full peace.
Guru Arjan adds a tender promise: til nahee bhannai ghaali-aa, not even a tiny bit of loving effort is wasted. Think of a parent who notices every small drawing their child makes. Then comes paraym mahaa ras maataa: filled up with the sweetness of love. It is joy spilling over, not losing yourself.
If your heart had one honest request, what would it be?
