The Saints deal in the Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe. Such is my merchandise as well. ||1||

In plain words

Different people trade in different goods — some in metals, some in spices, each with their own market.

The ones who love the One trade in something else entirely: the Name, the living awareness of the divine. That is the business I have chosen too.

Of everything you could spend your life gathering, the Name is the one treasure that lasts.
The deeper layer

Life is like a big market, and the best thing to trade in is the Name.

Some trade in bronze and copper. Others trade in cloves and betel nuts, la-ug supaaree. Banaj means trade, and khayp means a load of goods. Trading is the picture for the whole shabad. Kabir was a weaver who knew the marketplace well. He sees life as a great bazaar, a busy street market.

Think of a school fair with stalls selling toys, snacks and stickers. Everyone chooses what to spend on. The saints choose the Name, naam, the living presence of the One. Aisee khayp hamaaree: that is my merchandise too. It is the one thing that never loses its value.

A Question to Sit With

If your life were a shop, what would you most want to be known for selling?
