The Jewel and the Jeweller

ਆਪਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਆਪੈ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ ॥
aapeh ratan javaahar maanik aapai hai paasaaree.
He Himself is the pearl, the jewel, the ruby; He Himself is the jeweller.
ਆਪੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਆਪ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਆਪਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
aapai dah dis aap chalaavai nihchal hai bi-aapaaree. ||3||
He Himself spreads out in the ten directions. The Merchant is Eternal and Unchanging. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is the pearl and the ruby and the gem — and also the jeweller who knows their worth.

Spreading out in every direction, filling all of space, the One is the Merchant who never changes and never leaves.

The One is the treasure, the trader, and the whole marketplace — there is nothing outside it.
The deeper layer

The One is everything in the market at once.

Aapeh ratan javaahar maanik: the One is the jewel, the gem and the ruby. Aapai hai paasaaree: the One is also the jeweller who deals in them. The One is the treasure, the trader and the whole marketplace. Nothing stands outside the One. This is Ik Onkar, "the One is in all," told in the language of the market.

Dah dis means the ten directions, which simply means everywhere. Think of a play where one person writes it, acts every part and builds the stage too.

Kabir melts away the idea of buyer and goods. There is only one reality. And the Merchant is nihchal: never changing.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to you that the same One might be in the gift, the giver, and the receiver?
