Sikhism·Raag Kaydaaraa·Shabad 22
Verse 4 of 5

Not by Force, but by Grace

By one's own efforts, nothing is done. What can the mere mortal accomplish?
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
jaa tis bhaavai satgur bhaytai ayko naam bakhaanee. ||3||
When it pleases the Lord, the mortal meets the True Guru, and chants the Name of the One Lord. ||3||

In plain words

I have learned that I cannot force my way to peace. Effort and cleverness alone do not open the door.

When it pleases the One and grace is given, a true teacher appears. Then the heart begins to sing the One Name.

Peace is not forced into being — it is received when the heart opens.
The deeper layer

Peace comes as a gift, not as something we force.

Aapan kee-aa kachhoo na hovai: by our own doing alone, nothing happens. This marks the limit of effort that is all about "me." Grace does the real work. Grace is the One's kindness, given freely, not earned.

Think of trying to fall asleep by forcing it. The harder you push, the further sleep runs. It comes when you relax and let it.

Jaa tis bhaavai satgur bhaytai: when it pleases the One, we meet the True Guru, the true teacher. That meeting comes when the heart is ready and open. Peace is not built by trying harder. It is received when we finally open, and then the heart speaks the One Name.

A Question to Sit With

When has something good come to you not by trying harder, but by letting go?
