Yearning for a Glimpse, and Your Place Is Beautiful Beyond Words
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
My heart aches for just one glimpse of You.
Be kind — bring me together with good people who love You, and give me Your Name to carry.
I want to serve You, my true Beloved. Wherever I hear Your praise being sung, my heart leaps up with joy.
I would give anything for You, again and again. The place where You dwell is more beautiful than words can hold.
This is a prayer of longing: I want to see You.
Har kay darsan ko man chaa-o: my mind longs for a glimpse of the One. Darsan means seeing, a blessed glimpse. This line is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line and the center of the shabad. It asks for two gifts. One is satsang, the company of good people who love the One. The other is the Name.
Then comes a lovely line: jat sunee-ai tat man rahsaa-o, wherever I hear Your praise, my mind fills with joy. Just hearing becomes joy. It is deep listening, the kind Japji Sahib praises. Think of your favorite song coming on in a shop. Your heart lifts before you even think.
Vaaree fayree means "I give myself to You, again and again." It is the language of loving self-offering. And kavan anoop tayro thaa-o: how beautiful beyond compare is Your place!
What is a sound or song that instantly lifts your mood the moment you hear it?
