Humble Service Quiets the Shallow Wants

ਚਰਨ ਸੇਵ ਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੩॥
charan sayv sant saaDh kay sagal manorath pooray. ||3||
Serving at the Feet of the Holy Saints, all desires are fulfilled. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Stay humbly near the holy and serve them, and the deep wishes of your heart quietly come true.

Humble service near the holy quiets the ego's endless shallow wants and lets the heart's one deep desire be met.
The deeper layer

This verse says that humbly serving good and holy people fills the heart's deepest wishes.

Charan sayv sant saaDh kay sagal manorath pooray — serving at the feet of the sant and saaDh, the holy people who live close to the One, all manorath, heart's wishes, come true. The wishes that come true are the deep ones: the wish for peace, for meaning, for the One. Not every passing want.

How does that happen? Serving others humbly quiets the ego. And the ego is the part of us that keeps making up new wants — a new game, a new gadget, one more thing. When it goes quiet in humble service, the one deep wish underneath can be heard, and it is met. Think of helping serve food to others at a shared meal. You come away full in a way no second helping could make you.

A Question to Sit With

What is the deep wish underneath all your smaller wants — and might humble service open it more than chasing ever could?
