Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One is alive in every single heart, and it fills the water, the earth, and the wide sky — there is nowhere it is not.
This verse says the One lives in every heart and fills the water, the land and the sky.
In one breath, the little shabad lifts from the inner life to the whole world. Ghat ghat ayk varatdaa — in each and every ghat, heart, the One is present. Jal thal mahee-al pooray — filling jal, water, thal, land, and mahee-al, sky. Those three places together mean everywhere.
This is Ik Onkar, the One in all, said as a simple fact. There is no corner inside us (every heart) and no corner outside us (water, land, sky) where the One is missing. Think of the air in your house. It is in every room, in every corner, without anyone putting it there. The Presence that steadies the mind is not far off somewhere. It is part of everything that is.
If the One fills every heart and every place, where is the nearest spot you could notice it right now?
