Verse 6 of 9

Purity Comes Through Humility, Not Height

ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਧੂਰੇ ॥੫॥
paap binaasan sayvi-aa pavitar santan kee Dhooray. ||5||
I serve the Destroyer of sin, and I am sanctified by the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I serve the One who washes away every wrong.

I am made clean just by the dust at the feet of the holy.

The soul is made clean not by climbing to some height but by bowing to the dust at the feet of the holy — purity comes through humility.
The deeper layer

This verse says we are made clean by the One's grace, and the door to that grace is humility.

It puts two pictures of cleaning side by side. Paap binaasan sayvi-aa — I serve the One who destroys paap, wrongdoing. The One is the one who washes away whatever weighs on the soul. Then comes the humblest picture of all: pavitar santan kee Dhooray — I am made pure by the Dhoor, the dust, of the saints' feet.

Being made clean by the dust under someone's feet sounds strange at first. It means taking the lowest place. We are not cleaned by climbing up high. We are cleaned by bowing low, near people who love the One. Think of how a tall, proud tree can snap in a storm, while grass bends low and comes through fine. The two halves belong together. The One's grace makes us clean, and humility opens the door to that grace.

A Question to Sit With

Where might lowering yourself, rather than rising, be exactly what makes you cleaner inside?
