The Name of the Lord, our Lord and Master, is the Purifier of sinners; I sing of the Lord, the Destroyer of the fears of His devotees.
ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਓ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
har haar har ur Dhaari-o jan naanak naam samaa-i-aa. ||4||1||
One who wears the necklace of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in his heart, O servant Nanak, merges in the Naam. ||4||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Name cleans what feels stained and sings away the fears of those who love.
Wear the Name in your heart like a necklace, close against your skin, and you melt right into it.
Keep the Name close like a treasured necklace, and you become at home in it.
The closing Nanak line: one who wears har har naam as a maalaa (garland/necklace) samaanaa — merges — into the Naam. To "merge into the Name" is to become so at home in the awareness of the One that there is no gap left. The necklace image makes it tender and near: something worn, treasured, always touching the heart.
A Question to Sit With
If you wore one good thought close to your heart all day, what would you choose?
