In plain words

O my Father, holder of all wealth, blessed are You.

My beautiful darling, dark-skinned and long-haired, the one I love.

You can love the One the way you love someone dear and close.
The deeper layer

This one is a line of pure love, full of warm pet names for the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Bhagat Namdev calls the Beloved by homey, loving names. Many of them come from the stories of Krishna.

Baap means father. Another name means Lord of wealth. Kaysou means the long-haired one. Another means the dark-skinned one. Beethula is a loving name for the One, well known in Namdev's home region.

Think of the nicknames a family uses for someone they adore. The names are small and sweet, and each one says, "I love you."

The feeling is a child's delight, or a lover's gladness. It is close and happy.

A Question to Sit With

What are the warm names you use for the people you love most?
