Sikhism·Raag Maale Gaorhaa·Raag Maale-Gaorhaa, Shabad 7
Verse 2 of 5

Carried Across the Rough Water

ਜਿਨਾ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੀਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੰਗਾਰ ॥
jinaa mastak leekhi-aa tay milay sangaar.
They alone join the Sangat, the Congregation, upon whose forehead such destiny is inscribed.
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਾਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੧॥
sansaar bha-ojal taari-aa har sant purakh apaar. ||1||
They are carried across the terrifying world-ocean by the Saints of the Infinite, Primal Lord God. ||1||

In plain words

Those who join the good company were quietly meant to.

The kind saints of the One carry them across life's rough water, safe to the other side.

Good company can carry you safely through the roughest stretches.
The deeper layer

This one says good company carries you safely across the rough sea of life.

Sangat means the company of good people who remember the One. The verse says those who join it were meant to.

Sansaar bha-ojal taari-aa — they are carried across the world-ocean. Bha-ojal means the scary, tossing sea of life. The kind saints of the One carry them over.

Think of crossing a wide lake. Alone in a tiny boat, the waves feel huge. In a big, steady boat with friends, you reach the other side safe. Good company is the boat.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who help you get through hard patches?
