Sikhism·Raag Maale Gaorhaa·Raag Maale-Gaorhaa, Shabad 7
Verse 4 of 5

Without the Guide, Only Darkness — But the Guide Is Here

ਇਕਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਾਕਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰ ॥
ik bharam bhoolay saaktaa bin gur anDh anDhaar.
Some are faithless cynics, deluded by doubt; without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness.
ਧੁਰਿ ਹੋਵਨਾ ਸੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੋ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰ ॥੩॥
Dhur hovnaa so ho-i-aa ko na maytanhaar. ||3||
Whatever is pre-ordained, comes to pass; no one can erase it. ||3||

In plain words

Some drift in doubt and can't quite see, as if the lamp weren't lit yet. Without the Guide, it stays dark.

Whatever is meant to come, comes; no one can rub it out.

When the way looks dark, a guide can light it — and the flow can be trusted.
The deeper layer

This one says that without a guide the way is dark, and the guide is here.

Some people wander in doubt. The verse calls them saaktaa, people who turn away from the One. They simply have not found the light yet. Bin gur — without the Guru — it is pitch dark.

Think of walking into a dark room. You bump into things. Then someone flips the switch. The room was always there. Now you can see it.

The second line says whatever is meant to happen does happen, and no one can erase it. This points to hukam, the One's will that runs through everything. We can trust that flow instead of fighting it.

A Question to Sit With

When you can't see the way forward, who or what helps light it?
