Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 103
Verse 11 of 15

Reading Alone Doesn't Open the Door

vaacheh pustak vayd puraanaaN.
Some read scriptures, the Vedas and the Puraanas.
ik bahi suneh sunaaveh kaanaaN.
Some sit and listen, and read to others.
ajgar kapat kahhu ki-o khulHai bin satgur tat na paa-i-aa. ||11||
Tell me, how can the heavy, rigid doors be opened? Without the True Guru, the essence of reality is not realized. ||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some read the old scriptures and holy books, the Vedas and the Puraanas.

Some sit and listen, and read them aloud to others.

But how do the heavy doors of the heart swing open? Reading alone, without the Guru, the deepest truth stays just out of reach.

Words on a page open the mind; the Guru opens the heart.
The deeper layer

The Vedas and Puraanas are named respectfully. Reading without realization falls short: words on a page inform the mind, yet the heavy doors of the heart open through the Guru and inner understanding.

A Question to Sit With

When did something you only read about finally become real for you?
