Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 104
Verse 12 of 16

Washed Clean From the Inside

sabad bujhai so mail chukaa-ay.
One who realizes the Shabad is cleansed of impurities.
nirmal naam vasai man aa-ay.
The Immaculate Naam abides within his mind.
satgur apnaa sad hee sayveh ha-umai vichahu jaa-ee hay. ||12||
He serves his True Guru forever, and egotism is eradicated from within. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Take the living Word to heart, and what clouded you is washed away.

The pure Name comes to live in your mind.

You keep serving the Guru, and the proud little me quietly dissolves from within.

The Word washes you clean from the inside out.
The deeper layer

This is cleansing from the inside, not the outside. No outer washing reaches the place the Word reaches; it is ha-umai itself that dissolves.

A Question to Sit With

What is a way you can feel clean on the inside, not just the outside?
