ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
apnee nadar karay so paa-ay.
He alone finds the Lord, unto whom He grants His Grace.
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
sachai sabad taarhee chit laa-ay.
He links his consciousness to the deep meditative state of the True Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਰਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥
naanak daas kahai baynantee bheekhi-aa naam dar paa-ee hay. ||16||1||
Nanak, Your slave, offers this humble prayer; I stand at Your Door, begging for Your Name. ||16||1||

The one who finds the One is the one grace has quietly opened.
Then the mind settles into the deep still place the Word makes.
Nanak, Your servant, says this whole prayer: I stand at Your door, asking for one thing only, Your Naam.
When you can ask for only one thing, ask for the Name.
The composition closes as a humble prayer. Daas (servant) and bheekhi-aa (alms) are an honest, empty-handed asking, the posture of a heart that wants only one thing.
