Cooling the Fever of Always Wanting More

tarisnaa agan jalai sansaaraa.
The world is burning up in the fire of desire.
jal jal khapai bahut vikaaraa.
It burns and burns, and is destroyed in all its corruption.
manmukh tha-ur na paa-ay kabhoo satgur boojh bujhaa-ee hay. ||9||
The self-willed manmukh finds no place of rest anywhere. The True Guru has imparted this understanding. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The world runs hot with wanting, always reaching for the next thing.

A heart that only chases can never find a quiet place to rest.

But the Guru brings understanding, and understanding cools the fever down.

Endless wanting is a fever; understanding is the cool water that calms it.
The deeper layer

Tarisnaa, the thirst that is never satisfied, is here a fever rather than a punishment. The Guru's understanding is the cool water that calms it.

A Question to Sit With

When has wanting something too badly made you feel restless?
