The Thirst That Finally Cools

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

Serving the True Guru, lasting peace is experienced.
ਆਪੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
aapay aa-ay mili-aa sabhnaa kaa daataa.
He Himself, the Giver of all, has come and met me.

ha-umai maar tarisnaa agan nivaaree sabad cheen sukh ho-ee hay. ||7||
Subduing egotism, the fire of thirst has been extinguished; contemplating the Word of the Shabad, peace is found. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Serve the Guru, and a lasting peace settles in.

The Giver of everything has come and met me.

As the proud me quiets, the burning thirst cools, and resting in the Word, I am at peace.

When pride quiets, the endless thirst finally cools.
The deeper layer

As ha-umai quiets, tarisnaa agan (the fire of thirst) cools. Peace is found not by getting more but by the wanting itself settling down.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that leaves you satisfied, not just wanting more?
