Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 106
Verse 3 of 16

The Swan at Home in Its Own Heart

gurmukh naam milai vadi-aa-ee.
The Gurmukh is blessed with the glorious greatness of the Naam.
manmukh nindak pat gavaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukh, the slanderer, loses his honor.
naam ratay param hans bairaagee nij ghar taarhee laa-ee hay. ||3||
Attuned to the Naam, the supreme soul-swans remain detached; in the home of the self, they remain absorbed in deep meditative trance. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who turns to the Guru is blessed with the greatness of the Naam.

Speaking ill of others only costs a person their own peace.

But the pure of heart, like swans, rest lightly and free, at home in the quiet of their own deepest self.

Peace lives in your own heart, not in tearing others down.
The deeper layer

The soul-swans (hansa) are an old image for pure hearts. Slander harms the one who speaks it most of all; the pure rest at home in their own being (nij ghar).

A Question to Sit With

What is a way you can build yourself up without putting anyone else down?
