Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 106
Verse 4 of 16

The Brave One Who Quiets the Ego

sabad marai so-ee jan pooraa.
That humble being who dies in the Shabad is perfect.
satgur aakh sunaa-ay sooraa.
The brave, heroic True Guru chants and proclaims this.
kaa-i-aa andar amrit sar saachaa man peevai bhaa-ay subhaa-ee hay. ||4||
Deep within the body is the true pool of Ambrosial Nectar; the mind drinks it in with loving devotion. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whole and complete is the one who lets the proud me grow quiet inside the Word.

The brave Guru, the true hero, says it out loud.

For deep inside every one of us there is a pool of sweet living water, and the loving heart drinks it in.

A hero is someone brave enough to quiet their own ego.
The deeper layer

To die in the Shabad means the ego grows quiet, not that a person is harmed. The warrior (soorma) of this raag is the brave one who conquers the self; the reward is the pool of nectar (amrit) within.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone you think of as brave on the inside?
