Verse 5 of 16

The Emptiness of a Heart Turned Only Outward

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਬੁਰੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰਿ ॥
durmat jhoothee buree buri-aar.
The false and evil-minded are the most wicked of the wicked.
ਅਉਗਣਿਆਰੀ ਅਉਗਣਿਆਰਿ ॥
a-ugani-aaree a-ugani-aar.
They are the most unworthy of the unworthy.
ਕਚੀ ਮਤਿ ਫੀਕਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
kachee mat feekaa mukh bolai durmat naam na paa-ee hay. ||5||
With false intellect, and insipid words of mouth, evil-minded, they do not obtain the Naam. ||5||

In plain words

When a heart forgets the One completely, its choices grow hollow and thin.

It feels far from its own true worth.

Words go flat, thoughts go grey, and the living Name stays just out of reach, not because the door is shut, but because the heart has not yet turned toward it.

A heart turned only outward feels empty, but it can always turn back.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the One leaves a heart feeling empty, its words flat and its thoughts grey. The door stays open; the heart simply has not turned yet.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you turn your attention back toward what matters most?
