Verse 7 of 16

Dressing Up the Outside, Forgetting the In

durmat khotee khot kamaavai.
The evil-minded, wicked soul-bride practices wickedness.
seegaar karay pir khasam na bhaavai.
She decorates herself, but her Husband Lord is not pleased.
gunvantee sadaa pir raavai satgur mayl milaa-ee hay. ||7||
The virtuous soul-bride enjoys and ravishes her Husband Lord forever; the True Guru unites her in His Union. ||7||

In plain words

A heart can decorate its outside beautifully and still feel a quiet distance within.

All the finery in the world cannot stand in for what is real inside.

But a heart rich with goodness lives close to its Beloved always, and the Guru draws the two together.

What you grow inside matters more than what you hang on the outside.
The deeper layer

Outer decoration and inner goodness: the second one brings the soul close to its Beloved.

A Question to Sit With

What is a way of being beautiful that has nothing to do with looks?
