Verse 15 of 16

Guarding the Home That Is Your Own Heart

manmukh ha-umai maa-i-aa sootay.
The manmukhs are asleep in egotism and Maya.
apnaa ghar na samaaleh ant vigootay.
They do not watch over their own homes, and are ruined in the end.
par nindaa karahi baho chintaa jaalai dukhay dukh nivaasee hay. ||15||
They slander others, and burn in great anxiety; they dwell in pain and suffering. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A heart asleep in pride forgets to tend its own inner home.

When we neglect what is ours to care for, things quietly fall apart.

Speaking ill of others only stirs up worry inside; kindness is what brings the calm.

Tend your own heart first; that is the home only you can guard.
The deeper layer

The home to guard is one's own inner life. Slander stirs up worry; kindness brings the calm.

A Question to Sit With

What is one way you can take good care of your own inner world today?
