mayree mayree karat vihaanee.
Crying out, "Mine, mine!" he spends his life.
manmukh na boojhai firai i-aanee.
The self-willed manmukh does not understand; he wanders around in ignorance.
jamkaal gharhee muhat nihaalay an-din aarjaa chheejai hay. ||4||
The Messenger of Death watches over him every moment, every instant; night and day, his life is wasting away. ||4||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Mine, mine, we cry, and a whole life can slip by in the grabbing.
A heart lost in that never quite settles or sees.
And time is always moving, each day precious and short, so it is worth spending it on what matters most.
Days are short and precious; spend them on what matters most.
Mayree mayree, mine, mine: a whole life can pass inside that one word. An-din aarjaa chheejai: day by day the span of a life grows shorter, so each day is precious and worth spending well.
A Question to Sit With
If today were extra precious, what would you want to spend it on?
