Verse 14 of 16

What You Cannot Take With You

ha-umai mayraa doojaa bhaa-i-aa.
Egotism, possessiveness, and the love of duality
kichh na chalai Dhur khasam likh paa-i-aa.
- none of these shall go along with you; such is the pre-ordained will of our Lord and Master.
gur saachay tay saach kamaaveh saachai dookh nivaaree hay. ||14||
Through the True Guru, practice Truth, and the True Lord shall take away your pains. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The feeling of me and mine, the habit of grabbing — none of it can travel with you in the end.

So why let it rule the short, bright time you have?

Living from what is real, close to the Guru, your sorrows are gently lifted away.

What you cannot keep is not worth being ruled by.
The deeper layer

Kichh na chalai — nothing goes along. Haumai, mayraa (mine-ness), and doojaa bhaa-o (love of the second) are the very things that cannot cross with us. Knowing this is an invitation to loosen our grip now.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you hold too tightly that you could loosen your grip on?
