Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 111
Verse 13 of 16

Kept Afloat by the Name

naamay raataa pavit sareeraa.
Imbued with the Naam, the body is sanctified.
bin naavai doob mu-ay bin neeraa.
Without the Naam, they are drowned and die without water.
aavahi jaaveh naam nahee boojheh iknaa gurmukh sabad pachhaataa hay. ||13||
They come and go, but do not understand the Naam. Some, as Gurmukh, realize the Word of the Shabad. ||13||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the Name fills you, even your body becomes clean and bright.

Without it, we can feel strangely dry and lost, like being thirsty right beside a river.

Some, turning toward the Guru, wake up and know the Word.

What you long for may be closer than you think.
The deeper layer

Bin naavai doob mu-ay bin neeraa — a striking image of drowning without water. It is like thirst beside a river: the water is right there, and we forget to drink. The Name pavit sareeraa — makes even the body pure.

A Question to Sit With

When did you find that what you needed was right beside you all along?
