Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 111
Verse 5 of 16

Coming With Empty Hands

ham gun naahee ki-aa bolah bol.
I have no virtues; what words should I speak?
too sabhnaa daykheh toleh tol.
You see all, and weigh them on Your scale.
ji-o bhaavai ti-o raakhahi rahnaa gurmukh ayko jaataa hay. ||5||
By Your will, You preserve me, and so do I remain. The Gurmukh knows the One Lord. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I come with empty hands — what could I say to impress the One who sees everything?

You know each heart and weigh it fairly.

However You keep me, I rest in that, and the heart turned toward the Guru knows the One.

Empty hands before grace are a relief, not a shame.
The deeper layer

Ham gun naahee — I have no virtues of my own. Before grace the hands are honestly empty: there is nothing to boast, and that is a relief. Too sabhnaa daykheh toleh — the One weighs fairly, so there is no need to perform.

A Question to Sit With

What is it like to stop trying to impress and just be honest?
