Verse 6 of 16

Beyond the See-Saw of Good and Bad Days

paap punn vartai sansaaraa.
The world is engrossed in vice and virtue.
harakh sog sabh dukh hai bhaaraa.
Happiness and misery are totally loaded with pain.
gurmukh hovai so sukh paa-ay jin gurmukh naam pachhaataa hay. ||6||
One who becomes Gurmukh finds peace; such a Gurmukh recognizes the Naam. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The world spends itself keeping score of good and bad.

Riding the see-saw of happy days and sad days can wear a heart out.

The one who turns to the Guru finds a steady peace and recognizes the Naam.

A steady peace lives underneath the up-and-down of good and bad days.
The deeper layer

Harakh sog — pleasure and sorrow — are named as a heavy weight: the tiredness of a heart tossed by ups and downs. The Gurmukh, the one turned toward the Guru, finds sukh by resting in something deeper than the score.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing that stays good for you on both good days and bad?
