Verse 1 of 16

The Giver Who Needs Nothing

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 3.
Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਦਾਤਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਥਾਹਾ ॥
har jee-o daataa agam athaahaa.
The Dear Lord is the Giver, inaccessible and unfathomable.
ਓਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥
os til na tamaa-ay vayparvaahaa.
He does not have even an iota of greed; He is self-sufficient.
ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਅਪੜਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
tis no aparh na sakai ko-ee aapay mayl milaa-idaa. ||1||
No one can reach up to Him; He Himself unites in His Union. ||1||

In plain words

The One who gives everything asks for nothing back — not even a little. There is nothing to bargain for, and nothing you could ever earn your way to.

You could never climb all the way up to reach the One on your own. And you do not have to: the One reaches down and gathers you in.

The Giver who needs nothing from you is the One most ready to hold you.
The deeper layer

The One is the pure Giver — agam (beyond reach), athaah (unfathomable), vayparvaah (needing nothing). Because the One needs nothing, grace cannot be bought; the union is the One's own doing, not a wage we collect.

A Question to Sit With

What might change if you trusted that you do not have to earn being loved?
