Coming Home to the Sanctuary

bin satgur jo doojai laagay.
Without the True Guru, those who are attached to duality
aavahi jaahi bharam mareh abhaagay.
come and go, and wander in reincarnation; these unfortunate ones die.
naanak tin kee fir gat hovai je gurmukh raheh sarnaa-ee hay. ||4||
O Nanak, even after they are emancipated, those who become Gurmukh remain in the Guru's Sanctuary. ||4||

In plain words

Without the True Guru, those caught up in this-and-that keep coming and going. They wander lost and die, these unlucky ones.

Nanak says: those who turn toward the Guru and stay in the Guru's shelter are set free.

Staying in the Guru's shelter ends the wandering of a split heart.
The deeper layer

Doojai, duality, means being split between the One and a thousand other pulls. Without the Guru, that split keeps a person coming and going, wandering until death. Those who stay in the Guru's shelter (gurmukh raheh sarnaa-ee) find release.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel scattered, what helps you find your way back?
