Verse 5 of 16

Asking for the Priceless Name

gurmukh pareet sadaa hai saachee.
The love of the Gurmukh is forever true.
satgur tay maaga-o naam ajaachee.
I beg for the invaluable Naam, the Name of the Lord, from the Guru.
hohu da-i-aal kirpaa kar har jee-o rakh layvhu gur sarnaa-ee hay. ||5||
O Dear Lord, please be kind, and grant Your Grace; please keep me in the Guru's Sanctuary. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The love of one who turns toward the Guru is true forever.

From the True Guru I ask for the Naam that no money could buy. Dear One, be kind, give Your grace, and keep me in the Guru's shelter.

The best things cannot be bought — they can only be asked for and received.
The deeper layer

Ajaachee means beyond price — the invaluable Naam. Honest asking looks like this: open hands, asking the Guru for what only the Guru can give. The prayer hohu daiaal (be kind) is the empty-handed posture that grace meets.

A Question to Sit With

What is something priceless you would want to ask for?
