Do Not Spend Your Peace on Quarrels

jo jee-ai kee saar na jaanai.
But one who does not know the state of the soul
tis si-o kichh na kahee-ai ajaanai.
- do not say anything to such an ignorant person.
moorakh si-o nah loojh paraanee har japee-ai pad nirbaanee hay. ||5||
Do not argue with fools, O mortals. Meditate on the Lord, in the state of Nirvaanaa. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone who does not know the worth of the soul — say nothing to that unknowing person.

Do not argue with foolish people. Meditate on the One, and rest in deep, calm peace.

Skip the pointless quarrel and keep your mind on the One.
The deeper layer

Saar na jaanai — not knowing the worth of the soul. Words spent on such a person go nowhere, and a quarrel with a fool only wears you down. Pad nirbaanee is the state of deep, undisturbed peace, found by meditating on the One.

A Question to Sit With

When is it wiser to step back from an argument than to win it?
