Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 131
Verse 12 of 15

Untouched and Free

manmukh aavai manmukh jaavai.
The self-willed manmukh comes, and the self-willed manmukh goes.
manmukh fir fir chotaa khaavai.
The manmukh suffers beatings again and again.
jitnay narak say manmukh bhogai gurmukh layp na maasaa hay. ||12||
The manmukh endures as many hells as there are; the Gurmukh is not even touched by them. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A heart turned only toward its own wants comes and goes, and takes knocks again and again.

It goes through every dark place there is. The one who faces the Guru is not touched by even a speck of it.

Facing the Guru, not a speck of the trouble sticks to you.
The deeper layer

manmukh (self-facing) comes, goes, and takes knocks; jitnay narak — every dark place there is — falls to the manmukh. gurmukh (Guru-facing) is layp na maasaa — not even a speck sticks.

A Question to Sit With

What helps troubles roll off you instead of sticking?
