Verse 13 of 16

Meeting Good Days and Hard Days the Same

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
hukam boojhai so sayvak kahee-ai.
One who realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command is said to be His servant.
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਹੀਐ ॥
buraa bhalaa du-ay samsar sahee-ai.
He endures both bad and good equally.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਏਕੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
ha-umai jaa-ay ta ayko boojhai so gurmukh sahj samaa-idaa. ||13||
When egotism is silenced, then one comes to know the One Lord. Such a Gurmukh intuitively merges in the Lord. ||13||

In plain words

The one who understands the One's command is called the One's servant.

They bear bad and good in the same way.

When pride goes away, they come to know the One. The one who turns to the Guru merges easily into the One.

Understand the One's command, and meet bad and good with the same calm.
The deeper layer

Hukam boojhai so sayvak kahee-ai — one who understands the One's command, the flow of existence, is called a servant. Such a one buraa bhalaa du-ay samsar sahee-ai — meets bad and good with equal poise. The turning point is inward: ha-umai jaa-ay ta ayko boojhai — when the sense of being a separate self quiets, the One is seen, and the person sahj samaa-idaa, settles into natural ease.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you met a hard day with the same calm as a good one?
