Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 134
Verse 3 of 16

The One Who Opens Understanding

ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
keetaa hovai tis ki-aa kahee-ai.
What should I say, to one who has been created.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
gurmukh naam padaarath lahee-ai.
The Gurmukh receives the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਭੂਲੈ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
jis aap bhulaa-ay so-ee bhoolai so boojhai jisahi bujhaa-idaa. ||3||
He alone is confused, whom the Lord Himself confuses. He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What can anyone who was made say about the One who made them?

The one who turns to the Guru receives the treasure of the Naam.

Only the one the One lets wander gets lost. Only the one the One helps to understand, understands.

Understanding dawns as a gift, not a prize you seize.
The deeper layer

Keetaa hovai tis ki-aa kahee-ai — what can the made thing say about its Maker? The gurmukh (one turned toward the Guru) receives naam padaarath, the treasure of the Naam. And a subtle truth follows: understanding is not seized by cleverness; it is awakened. This is Gurprasad — grace that is always here, received when you become open, not earned by effort.

A Question to Sit With

When did an idea suddenly become clear to you, as if it arrived on its own?
