The One Steady Thing in a Changing World

khand pataal deep sabh lo-aa.
All the continents, nether worlds, islands and worlds
sabh kaalai vas aap parabh kee-aa.
- God Himself has made them all subject to death.
nihchal ayk aap abhinaasee so nihchal jo tiseh Dhi-aa-idaa. ||7||
The One Imperishable Lord Himself is unmoving and unchanging. Meditating on Him, one becomes unchanging. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All the lands, the worlds below, the islands and the worlds — the One made every one of them to pass away in time.

Only the One stays steady, and never passes away.

Whoever remembers the One becomes steady too.

Everything changes; resting your heart on the One grows a steady center.
The deeper layer

Khand, pataal, deep, sabh lo-aa — realms, worlds below, islands, all the worlds — are under kaal, death and time. Everything moves on. Set against this is the One who is nihchal, abhinaasee — unmoving, never perishing. And the promise: so nihchal jo tiseh Dhi-aa-idaa — whoever remembers the steady One becomes steady too.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that felt permanent but changed, and what stayed steady for you through it?
