Waves Rising From the Same Water

har kaa sayvak so har jayhaa.
The Lord's servant becomes like the Lord.
bhayd na jaanhu maanas dayhaa.
Do not think that, because of his human body, he is different.
ji-o jal tarang utheh baho bhaatee fir sallai salal samaa-idaa. ||8||
The waves of the water rise up in various ways, and then the water merges again in water. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who serves the One becomes like the One.

Don't think they are different just because they have a human body.

Waves rise from the water in many shapes, and then the water merges back into water.

We are waves of one sea — rising in many shapes, made of the same water.
The deeper layer

Har kaa sayvak so har jayhaa — the one who serves the One becomes like the One; do not mistake them for different because of their human body. Then the most beautiful image of all: ji-o jal tarang — as waves rise in countless forms and then sallai salal samaa-idaa, water merges back into water. It is a clear picture of haumai, the sense of a separate self, dissolving: the wave never stopped being ocean, and settling back is homecoming, not loss.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone is a wave of the same ocean, how does that change how you see a stranger?
