Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 136
Verse 1 of 15

Don't Be Fooled by the Surface

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 5.
Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਭੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
soorat daykh na bhool gavaaraa.
Do not be fooled by appearances, you fool.
ਮਿਥਨ ਮੋਹਾਰਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
mithan mohaaraa jhooth pasaaraa.
This is a false attachment to the expanse of an illusion.
ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣਾ ॥੧॥
jag meh ko-ee rahan na paa-ay nihchal ayk naaraa-inaa. ||1||
No one can remain in this world; only the One Lord is permanent and unchanging. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Do not let the shiny surface of things trick you, my friend.

The pull to grab and hold onto passing things is a kind of make-believe.

Nobody gets to stay here forever — only the One stands steady and never changes.

Do not let the shiny surface fool you; only the One stands steady.
The deeper layer

A gentle wake-up: do not be fooled by appearances. Clinging to the impermanent is jhooth pasaaraa, a spread of make-believe. No one remains in the world; only the One is nihchal, permanent and unchanging. The word gavaaraa, "you fool", is a wake-up call to a friend who has been dazzled.

A Question to Sit With

What shiny thing have you wanted that turned out not to last?
