I know nothing about service and awareness; please take pity upon this worm. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have stepped into the shelter of the saints.

I lay everything I have before them — my life, my breath, my wealth.

I know nothing about service or awareness; please be kind to me, small as I am.

Bring everything you have to the saints, and ask for kindness.
The deeper layer

Coming to the saints, a person says, "Here is everything I have. I know nothing. Please be kind to me."

Santan kee sarnaa-ee parhi-aa — "I have come into the shelter of the saints." Saints here means the good-hearted, people who live close to the One. The seeker lays down everything: jee-o praan Dhan — life, breath and wealth.

Then comes an honest line. "I know nothing about service." The verse calls the speaker a kirmaa-inaa, a tiny worm. It is a way of saying, "I am very small." It is humility, not putting yourself down.

Think of a new student on the first day of music lessons. They bring their whole heart, but they cannot play yet. They do not pretend. They just say, "Teach me." That open, empty-handed feeling is where learning begins.

A Question to Sit With

Where are you a beginner right now, still learning how?
