Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 136
Verse 6 of 15

More Than Any Wish

ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਮਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
paarjaat lorheh man pi-aaray.
O my beloved mind, if you wish for the 'tree of life';
ਕਾਮਧੇਨੁ ਸੋਹੀ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥
kaamDhayn sohee darbaaray.
if you wish for Kaamadhayna, the wish-fulfilling cow to adorn your court;
taripat santokh sayvaa gur pooray naam kamaa-ay rasaa-inaa. ||6||
if you wish to be satisfied and contented, then serve the Perfect Guru, and practice the Naam, the source of nectar. ||6||

In plain words

O my heart, do you long for a tree that grants every wish?

Do you long for the magic cow that fills every need in your home?

Do you want to feel full and content? Then serve the Perfect Guru and live the Naam, the spring of nectar.

Serve the Guru and live the Naam, and you will feel full inside.
The deeper layer

The feeling of being full inside comes from serving the Guru and living the Name.

Old stories tell of two wonders. The paarjaat is a tree that grants any wish. The kaamDhayn is a cow that gives whatever you ask for. Both stand for getting everything you want.

The verse speaks to the mind like a loving friend. Paarjaat lorheh man pi-aaray — "Dear mind, do you long for the wish-granting tree?" Then it points somewhere better. Taripat santokh — being satisfied, and being content — comes from serving the Perfect Guru, the true Teacher. It comes from living the Name, which is a spring of nectar.

Think of a birthday list that goes on for pages. Even if you got it all, you would soon want more. Feeling full is different. It does not come from getting. It grows from the inside, and it lasts.

A Question to Sit With

If you got everything on your wish-list, what would you still be hungry for?
